Tim Welke can forget about making the Baseball Hall of Fame as an umpire, after calling Jerry Hairston of the Dodgers out at first base, despite Rockie first baseman Todd Helton not even having his foot close to the first base bag.
Welke has been a major league umpire since 1984 in a career encompassing 28 years. He has umpired in four World Series, but doubt he will be on the field for the 2012 World Series, after his horrendous call yesterday at Coors Field.
Can you imagine him making this call with Lou Piniella in the opposing dugout? I think Don Mattingly was so confounded by the call, that he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
